A new book about Indian independence leader Subhas Chandra Bose, written by his great-nephew historian Sugata Bose, tries to put to rest conflicting accounts of his life and to explain how a socialist leader could go to the Nazis in Germany and to Imperial Japan to seek support for his struggle for Indian independence.

Add your comment. To understand Bose one must fully appreciate the infamy of English misrule in India. During the war, in Bengal, a man-made famine, exacerbated by English policy, caused the deaths of six to ten million people. This Holocaust has interested Western publics not one iota, being virtually unknown, while Nazi crimes are never forgotten nor should they be. This famine was the last of several that afflicted India under English tyranny, killing tens of millions.
